A fresh view of floodplain ecology and management by jeff opperman and peter moyle co authors of floodplains processes and management for ecosystem services last week we saw tragic images of floods across the world from houston to niger to south asia . Floodplains are among the most dynamic productive diverse and threatened ecosystems in the world tockner and stanford 2002 intact and restored floodplains generate major environmental benefits that provide significant support for local and regional economies most notably through flood risk management fisheries recreation and seasonal agriculture postel and carpenter 1997. Floodplains provides an overview of floodplains and their management in temperate regions it synthesizes decades of research on floodplain ecosystems explaining hydrologic geomorphic and ecological processes and how these processes can provide a range of benefits to society under appropriate management. The issue this project addresses processes that determine structure and functional elements of large river floodplains including understanding to apply to management and restoration of floodplains for fish wildlife and ecosystem servicesconnectivity between a river channel and the adjacent floodplain is widely recognized to provide many ecological benefits. Floodplains provides an overview of floodplains and their management in temperate regions it synthesizes decades of research on floodplain ecosystems explaining hydrologic geomorphic and ecological processes and how under appropriate management these processes can provide benefits to society ranging from healthy fish populations to flood risk reduction
